On a Diet

I dined on your expectations,
enticed by the spice of your words –
insatiable this hunger for approval.

Mistook self-assuredness
for wisdom – how bitter
the aftertaste, how empty
the truth –

Learning to feed myself –
sustenance geared to fulfilling
personal dreams.

Love is a Triangle

Balanced sustenance –
a recipe I seek, but
my mate is needy,
treasures extremes,
pulls, tugs – despite
the resistance,
the doubt,
I will succeed.

Triangular,
this relationship –
I hold one corner,
a loyal staple, while
he runs on sentiment,
questions mechanics,
manipulates,
threatens to tear
us apart, but
our love –
the pinnacle –
keeps us in check.

(Do you ever write a poem, tuck it away, and then discover it later, with no remembrance of the words or process?  Such is this poem for me.  No idea what spurred it and yet, here it is.  Thought I’d share it anyway.  Thanks for reading. Image is from personal collection.)

Good Woman

Cater,
Good Woman; keep your pantry full –
there are mouths to feed, and
whims to answer,
smile on.

Smile on,
Good Woman, feed the children young
and old, their needs cry out
for nourishment;
be strong.

Be strong,
Good Woman, tending your oven,
concocting recipes,
born to serve, raised
to please.

To please
Good Woman, be sure your own pot
is overflowing, lest
fatigue sets in,
and then

And then,
Good Woman, who caters to you –
the children are gone and
husband retired –
what now?

Cancer. Support.

Cancer.
The fear reverberates, ping-pongs
through our community –
seniors with hope,
fresh start
desire
after years of toil, children, woes
we congregate, create –
new family,
future,
plans rise
yet, we know, existence is
unpredictable, key
in another’s
hands – God
drives, we
follow, fulfill, crave redemption,
or at the very least,
a few year’s rest,
pleasure
unchecked
before the ‘C’ word is unleashed
and hearts throb with sorrow,
band together,
support.
