Like this Carolina Wren, I’m fixing my gaze on the unknown, senses alert. Temperatures are rising, we’re almost half way through July, and I’m feeling my determination strengthen. What change is on the horizon?
I’ll be over here pondering.

The events of the past few weeks, plus the rain, seemed to have caught up with me. Day’s goal: rest, rest, and more rest.

We held a garage sale this past Saturday – no small feat for two gimpy old folks. Fortunately, we had help, and as it was a town-wide event, there were many people out.
Still exhausted two days later, but feeling like this squirrel with his treasure – blessed by abundance.

Skyward I cast
this melancholy,
hook a cloud
and drift…
A dalliance
with the sun –
his irrepressible
optimism scolds
I let go the tether
retreat to sombre soil
re-commit to
gloom’s scold
(Image my own. Scold first appeared on Twitter)
Charcoal-etched dreams
smudged on the canvas of time…
Direction has been lacking,
understanding remiss
That I remain – sail upright –
is feat enough…

Sinister motivations
thoughts cascade
emotional waterfall
Hope plants herself
on the banks of this torrent
like succulents, sturdy
I will ground myself
on solid shore – revive
this water-downed spirit

Restlessness accompanies me
on this sojourn today –
unfazed by ripe red
belly of robin,
or shimmering emerald
of breeding merganser’s crown.
My lens seeks out decay –
rotting wood, darkened cavities,
as if my soul craves reassurance
that life persists even where death
hovers – I need a sign
Discontent, I move on-
drive the river road
snail’s pace – praying for
something to shake
this malaise –
birds come and go,
trees radiate Spring green,
I pause, unmoved.
And then I spot it,
across the river, up high,
a massive hulk;
lens raises, adjusts, snaps,
the regal hunter turns toward me
regards me with ferocious intensity,
does not falter on his perch –
All-seeing, fearless,
he is spirit-manifested,
a messenger, lifting me
from stagnation –
momentary redemption.

A backlog of beacons
light this pitiful path
Am I too morose to respond,
or is this stubborn arrogance?
Resigned to believe
no good will come
Like a broken record, stuck
on that one sad love song.

Days like this –
life without spin –
one emotion
one conflict
one moment
colouring response
as if singularity
is all we can bear –
