This year the plague came
and I blamed the wind
for carrying destruction
and I blamed the sun
for its ineptitude
and the rain,
no friend of mine,
only served to drown
my expectations.
Lockdown
and social distance
masks and antiseptics
how was a soul
to survive?
Pushing 2020
out the door
certain relief
would follow
but change is not
a date on the calendar
a release of circumstance
I turned inward
faced the gloom
and found a spark
forgave the weather
the virus, the news
In 2021, I woke up…

Perfect picture to go with your beautifully penned poem! The picture of the bird makes it seem like you were writing out it’s thoughts! π β€

Change is not a date on the calendar – well put, VJ!
In the US for sure, likely global, 2021 is a period of transition extending from 2020. I hope, hope, hope to live till better times prevail. Waking up to reality is not comfortable … but essential to progressing …

I just said to Ric last night: “In these strange times at least we have something to wake up to”, meaning that the news and circumstances are constantly changing.

I really liked how you laid out 2020 then turned inward and found that spark. Then ‘woke’ up in 2021. I felt hopeful by the end of your poem. Thanks.

Your poem serves as a good reminder that I need to wake up to 2021 because I didn’t expect change with the new year. You’ve given me a lot to think about.

Ah, we do have to look within to find the light, the momentum to keep going and make what we can of life!

Absolutely. Waiting on ‘other’ seldom cuts it.
