I thumb through social media, make lists, scan through photos, put the kettle on, check emails…
…evade the moment…
What am I afraid will happen if I just pause and be?
Maybe I should I try it and see…

Tides recede,
puddled remnants
of once oceanic flooding –
emotions overpowering –
threats now quelled.
I breathe,
lose myself in visions
of gold and promising greens,
yesterday’s heat a numbing haze
obscuring tomorrow’s obstacles.
No click-clack of heels –
a fading echo marking retreat
no lingering exhaust fumes,
or squeal of escaping tires
no white trails marking
passage of airplane wings
just a sudden absence
of words, a lapsed date
lets you know I am gone
