Mermaid Dreams

into the mythical
spurred by
severity of
current challenge

Call it fantasy
but attempting
movement is
my passage

I am pulling,
this barricade
of a life; blue
ocean bound.

(Mermaid Dreams was originally written in December of 2016, two years bedridden. Only in the dreamtime was I whole and capable of overcoming. Dreams are one thing I can talk about for thirty minutes without preparation: my challenge this week. Image my own.)

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. I really like the mermaid metaphor for trying to escape the reality of your physical state. I could feel that pull and tug in the last stanza, trying to head for the open sea. I also really like the image. What medium is it? It looks a little like pastels, but I’m not sure.

    1. Thanks Liz. I had many mermaid dreams during that time – for me symbolic of being able to navigate greater depths of existence. The image is actually a photograph, altered.

    1. Asking for a follow back is not seen as proper etiquette in the blogging world. I see that your blog is just getting started. I’m not in the numbers game, but am willing to develop a relationship with an established blogger. Keep going and keep in touch.

  2. Being Bedridden for long periods are definitely challenging times V.J. … my many dreams were vivid … and with a pencil and notebook, I was able to stay reasonably sane ..
