Bird of Prey
Unexpected,
this encounter –
piercing golden eyes
a coat of mottled feathers,
a new visitor to our river –
not sure who is more startled.
(Smaller than the bald eagle, this bird of prey was perched riverside. Â Suspect it is a red-tailed hawk. Â For Granny Shot It’s Bird of the Day.)

Afternoon Visitor
Elegantly attired, he arrives,
focused on an afternoon feast –
garter snakes hiding in bushes –
hadn’t counted on human presence,
interrogates me with hawkish eyes,
just long enough to be immortalized.
