Unexpected,
this encounter –
piercing golden eyes
a coat of mottled feathers,
a new visitor to our river –
not sure who is more startled.
(Smaller than the bald eagle, this bird of prey was perched riverside. Suspect it is a red-tailed hawk. For Granny Shot It’s Bird of the Day.)

That’s quite the facial expression!

It’s like he is saying “Do you mind?”

He’s perched where the young eagle usually sits – that’s why I say he startled us both. Likely is saying “Do you mind?” while I was saying: “Hello, who are you?”

Glad to know I’m not alone in talking to the birds!

I love “unexpected” encounters with other species. I looked up Red tailed hawk range and their range covers most of North America from Canada to Mexico. I know they are very common down here.

They are common here too, and there are many variations. I hadn’t seen this particular one before, but that doesn’t mean much really. Thanks Betty. The river never fails to surprise me.
