Betrayal hugs with enthusiasm
public displays of warmth
so charming
Betrayal clutches vials
and pockets the laundry money
and gives a cheeky wink
Betrayal taps the shoulder
and ducks before the reveal
grins like the Cheshire cat
Plays me like a top
spinning, spinning,
and toppling hard
till I’m bent over
head between my legs
glancing backward
Sure that I just saw
the white rabbit,
out of breath
Each word a pill
making me bigger
or smaller
Then off with my head
Betrayal has made me a pawn
till it tires of me and moves on….
(Image my own.)
Immediately, my head filled with Alice’s adventures, and that song.
Great metaphor, and reading, VJ!

Clever and engaging, VJ. Betrayal is the worst, particularly when the blow is dealt from those we expect will us love us the most.

This was one of my sister-in-law’s favorite songs…so haunting. You got me with the ‘public displays of warmth’, VJ. Betrayal. Of the first order.

Thanks Victoria. I played the part of Alice for 17 years – too caught up in the spin to recognize the game.

Excellent choice of central metaphor for this hard-hitting poem.

Thanks Liz. I’ve always thought of Alice and drugs, but while working on this piece, I realized that abuse can make you feel the same way.
