Daring

Sidestepped comfort
dared to breach
personal boundaries

Knew it was a stretch

Uncouth, this bodily response
pain penetrating

Dark thoughts wrestling
inner rebel smirking

I gleaned a moment of freedom
But at what cost?

(ME/cfs is characterized by exhaustion following exertion. Post Exertional Malaise (PEM) is the result, causing symptoms to flare.)

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. That line—’I gleaned a moment of freedom, but at what cost?’—captures the painful reality of ME/CFS so movingly. I loved reading Mary’s comment about having the courage to dare, and your beautiful response that ‘the spirit strives on for sure.’ Sending you warmth and gentle wishes for a peaceful recovery, VJ!
