Not Taking It

We climbed so high
this mountain of man
made obstacles –

I remember the rage,
no more than 9 –
how helpless it felt

a girl in a man’s world
but I climbed anyway,
we climbed anyway

and, instead of a hand up
we get this? Patriarchy
be damned! Your days are
numbered. Mark my words.

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. This is a powerful and visceral piece, VJ. The shift from the intimate memory of childhood rage to the collective “we” of shared struggle is masterfully done. That closing line isn’t just a threat—it’s a promise, and it lands with the weight of a hammer. Absolutely electrifying work.

  2. It’s never easy, coming out of, this sort of a, horrific abuse of our, childhood years, but, we all, survived one way or, another, we are all, grown up, and, had, stopped letting those who hurt us in our younger years to, define or to, control us now.
