Aftermath

The sibilant hiss
of fridge slays
this silence –
I am numb,
hummed,
lulled
by sleepiness –
slippery echoes
of weekend’s voices
linger, ring
in my ears,
the disruption
ending so abruptly –
I am rendered
listless, fuzzed.

(Onomatopoeia is the prompt tonight at dVerse, hosted by Bjorn.)

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. Smiling I am. This reminds me of our earlier days as grandparents when we’d have the little ones over for a 2 or 3 day stay, all that activity and buzz filled with chaotic noise and always love…and then they’d leave and we’d close the door and just go sit. 😊

  2. As someone who has battled insomnia, I found it strange that the busy-ness of the mind can override the fatigue of the body, making you hypersensitive to every noise. Nice rocking of the prompt.

  3. Oh, I know that feeling, V.J., which you have captured so well from the ‘sibilant hiss’ of the fridge’ to the ‘slippery echoes
of weekend’s voices’ and the wonderful wordplay of ‘linger, ring / in my ears’ – so nicely done!

  4. Kind of a back and forth reaction to sounds: slayed, lulled, disrupted, fuzzed. Makes me picture someone nodding off, but getting jolted awake by each new sound (or thought). Very lyrical.

  5. Oh, I love this so. These words, “slippery echoes
    of weekend’s voices
    linger, ring
in” and “I am rendered” just grab me. And “listless, fuzzed” is so evocative. So well written!

  6. It’s interesting – I read this twice – once, I thought it depicted sleepiness perfectly and the second time I thought it illustrated insomnia perfectly. Well done!
