Light in the Night

What light is this
illuminates the midnight clouds?

I have risen from my bed
lured by this oddness

Suspecting menace,
but finding only wonder

How the walnut radiates
her presence conspiratorial

Pine tree and brush
surely giggle at my confusion

The yard, a marvel in white
glows in the unexpected brightness

I sense, but cannot surmise
a message in this nocturnal glow

Feel only the inadequacy of my awe
and the inferiority of humble words.

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. I love this moment you describe, and you do it so well. Especially with this couplet:

    “Suspecting menace,
    but finding only wonder”

I love that moment of relief at finding only beauty, whilst expecting otherwise 🌸

  2. I love this, VJ. You’ve captured quite well the wonder and awe of that special light that enchants us whether it’s early morning, late afternoon or as here, in the middle of the night under the glow of a hidden or in-full-view moon. Wonderful!
