What light is this
illuminates the midnight clouds?
I have risen from my bed
lured by this oddness
Suspecting menace,
but finding only wonder
How the walnut radiates
her presence conspiratorial
Pine tree and brush
surely giggle at my confusion
The yard, a marvel in white
glows in the unexpected brightness
I sense, but cannot surmise
a message in this nocturnal glow
Feel only the inadequacy of my awe
and the inferiority of humble words.
(Photo captured at 1:30 am, three nights ago)
So emotive, VJ. ‘Feel only the inadequacy of my awe
and the inferiority of humble words.’ Just like me, I feel so inadequate to comment.

The gift of wonder is a miracle. I wonder if what you saw are what the Russians refer to as their glorious” White Nights”?

I’ve never heard of that, Deborah. Interesting. I agree. Wonder is a miracle.

How very beautiful, VJ. Although you deem your words inadequate, your poem is magical, and it makes me miss winter. I used to really love the beauty of a fresh snow. Thank you. š

I love this moment you describe, and you do it so well. Especially with this couplet:
“Suspecting menace,
but finding only wonder”
I love that moment of relief at finding only beauty, whilst expecting otherwise šø

That photo is chilling and serene, simultaneously. I wouldn’t have known it was real, aside from the caption.

I love this, VJ. You’ve captured quite well the wonder and awe of that special light that enchants us whether it’s early morning, late afternoon or as here, in the middle of the night under the glow of a hidden or in-full-view moon. Wonderful!

There is always something magical about waking in the middle of the night to a fresh snowfall! I loved the opening stanza…a little Shakespearean!
