The stillness within these walls contrasts the frazzled buzzing in town. Shops lined with Christmas must-haves will entice those running on impulse. Buy, buy, buy! This season, more than any other, evokes a yearning for perfection. I am weary of it all, defiantly resisting the urge to dress and venture out for that one last thing. We will gather soon enough, exchange gifts, gorge ourselves on seasonal specialities. Afterward, I will be content to find a quiet corner, reflect and give thanks for another holiday season survived.

Love that haiku! I walked down the ‘seasonal aisle’ in the supermarket
today, and all it featured was valentine hearts and candy.

This is so nice, VJ. I love that you used the haibun here, one of my favorite poetic forms. Ah, yes. Reflection. I’ve been doing much of that of late. Wouldn’t the world be a kinder, more pleasant place to exist if everyone did just that? I realize I cannot know what’s in the hearts and minds of others but there are some dark-souled people in this world and how I wish the light would reach them!

I love the form too, Julie. The world would be so much better if we practiced reflection, but as you say, we cannot know the minds of others. Holding our own centre seems to be the most worthy challenge.

I have to go out for the fruit and veg on Monday but that’s it. A lovely haibun.

When I was a younger version of me, a very busy working mom, life was hectic and especially at Christmas, the season illustrated my lack of balance in certain things. The holiday would pass, and I’d think, “Next year I will do less. It will be simpler, and better.” Gradually it did, but wouldn’t it be nice if we just came here knowing this?” I love your words, and your art. Merry Christmas, dear VJ.

Our expectations have been skewered. I don’t know how I got through those younger days with my children. Thanks Susan. All the best of the season to you.

Stillness is what I feel we all crave, don’t you? A chance to silently commune.
