so seldom
do we address
the issue
frightened, perhaps
by the shadows,
the underlying
darkness –
or is ignorance
a more comfortable
state: a numbing
defiance?
(I once wrote poems for Twitter, but it seems to have lost its charm. Image my own.)

avoidance of issues comes from so many places … learnt from family and/or fear! But I find the more I step up and confront, the healthier and more open my life becomes 🙂
Such a thought provoker VJ

I can really relate to this one, VJ. I avoided a particular “underlying darkness” for many years and once I came face to face with it, man, it opened up so much to me. Now I can look on some of my worst bugaboos with curiosity instead of avoidance. Oh, and has that made a difference.

Yes TD Jakes said it’s the ‘thing” behind the “thing.” Sometimes we don’t understand the underlying issue that manifests itself in so many ways. Talking to friend sometimes help.

You are so right – that which sets us off is seldom the core issue.

Ignorance, avoidance, defiance…oh my — how they all swim together. Thank you, VJ.

I suppose there is ignorance and willful ignorance, which means the latter isn’t ignorance at all. Do we have a specific word for that? (I love the exploration of words in poetry.) Anyway, I think there is a lot of willful ignorance these days, to numb we are afraid to face as a collective. But it is a dangerous defiance.

Yes. Really, that is what my poem Avoidance is about today. Societal blindness

Me too, Liz. How to approach difficult issues was never really taught/ modelled.

I found out later in life that my dad was an avoider, too, and I had followed in his shoes.

My mom was the avoider. My father was a brick wall. If ever there was to be a confrontation, I was picked, but I hated it.

We try to escape, because we can’t deal, and, running seems like, the only option we’d been, given, and, before we know it, we would be, escaping from, everything that happens in our lives, and, we, NEVER learn, to, face our, problems to try and, resolve, them.
