Whose Earth Is This?

Whose Earth is this?
ask the trees reaching
to kiss mountainous sky.

Who cares for her?
ask the creatures all,
grateful for her bounty.

Machines rumble
forests fall – a stand
for progress answers none.

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. Your poem has given voice to how I’ve been feeling, particulary lately, as more and more swaths of woodlands are being decimated by developers. I LOVE how the image expresses the same thing without words.

  2. Wow, this is so powerful, VJ, and in just three stanzas. I enjoyed the personification of of the trees and the earth – it make the last stanza all the more powerful. Excellent post.

  3. Kiss that mountainous sky good-bye…feeling a little pessimistic this morning as I reflect on the smoke in the air, its causes, the words of our Premier Mr. Moe. and now your poem- which emotes a very subtle poignancy.

  4. One day they will understand. I had a teacher in high school who said, the planet will outlast us, and regenerate. Nature will survive despite what we do. This was 1980’s.. he’d already given up hope that we’d change.🥴
