Midnight Encounter

Midnight
and moon casts an eerie light
shimmers of white-kissed fields

Headlights off,
I pause to contemplate the glow
endless skies here beyond city limits

A herd of deer graze
ignore the hum of idling motor
celebrate the lunar flood

What drove me here,
I cannot say; perhaps clouds
relentless in February skies

Or may it was another pull,
a knowing, a grace, calling me
to open spaces…an offering

Surreal this suspended moment
stars dispersing sombre greys
tides of emotion releasing

I am transported,
uplifted, encouraged –
Heaven’s stellar promise.

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. Love the poem! Reminds me of a time when I was traveling alone to a remote island in the Philippines. Sitting by the balcony, enjoying the ocean breeze on a full moon night. And great artwork too!

  2. Also, just a note – I had a draft of a post sitting for a LONG time – and plan to publish it soon – it was my sharing your pst abotu AVIAN FRIENDS – and my goodness – how did I let it sit in a draft for that long? I also have Ana Lindens’ review that seemed to get stuck in draft mode (can I blame it on the pandemic?) anyhow, I will be checking back in later this month
    have a nice day

      1. well I think I also let it “sit” because sometimes it felt like bragging or just a little uncomfortable to share what feels like “promoting” but I see more and more that it is really just “celebrating” one’s work and the community that goes with it …

  3. Whoa! I love this poem and I feel like I’ve been there. A long time ago I was driving on a country road at night and came upon 40 or 50 white bush bunnies in the middle of the road. Stopped, turned off the headlights, and allowed them to scatter into the low bushes in the ditch.

Beautiful artwork here, too, VJ. As always, thanks for sharing!
