Mouse Massacre

There are mouse bits
splayed across the sunroom
stuck to my favourite throw rug
and great globs of glue

The trap my husband set
to catch the recent invasion
apparently lured the hunter
for she, stiff legged and
face matted, is skulking
elsewhere

I stepped on a gluey bit
eyes not yet open
before noting
the disarray

Hard to concentrate
when a tail detached
from a thigh (foot intact)
lie stuck to one’s rug
and entrails drip down
the freshly painted
off-white wall.

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. Your writing was so powerful. It brought back memories and emotions very much like PTSD when we had to battle with four rats invading our apartment. The glue pad didn’t work. They were too smart for it. Eventually, we managed to trap them one by one using a traditional box trap. But in retrospect, it felt like a humane thing to do as we released them outside.

  2. Oh NOOOOO VJ. a lovely treat to show their love.. soooo sorry. My cat started pooping and barfing on my living room rug. So gross and I’m so mad. Had the carpet cleaner out today. Hope it’s over! ❣️
