Daddy yelled
and Mommy cried
and new dresses appeared

A pattern
my young heart
vowed to break

Chose a man,
reticent in nature,
pursued a career

Then babies came
and I stayed home
and he withheld cash

Pendulum swings
left to right – money
holds the key to power

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. I, fortunately, never had to live in that situation, in my family of origin or my current family. I have, however, known so many women who have had that as their lives. I am glad that is not your current situation, VJ. I am glad you posted this poem again. It is a good poem to serve up again.

  2. This is so sad to me – and insightful. Your poem stirs up memories of the lives I watched being lived while I was growing up. As a child I saw that mothers (often in my world) were trapped and vulnerable. Lots of images in few words. I guess that’s why it’s poetry. πŸ™‚
