Anticipating owl’s hoot
dove’s coo startles me
I am plodding turtle
hard-shelled
searching for circles
in this squared-off existence
Dove offers a throaty laugh
then is gone before
my soft-bellied self
can beg deliverance.

I wanted to say that I really enjoyed this post, both the poem and the lovely artwork. Sorry for the messy comments. I am having trouble lately being able to do comments. Do not know what’s up.

Love the artwork! I’m intrigued by the dove, it comes across with a darkened image…”offers a throaty laugh”, we don’t often read of the dove as one who mocks, or was it more that he’s just out of reach?

It’s true that the dove is usually a soothing presence, but the narrator doesn’t figure that out till it’s too late. It’s the trap of expectations and defensiveness, I’d say.

This line “searching for circles
in this squared-off existence” equates to finding the start of the circle, is it so?

For me it is always feeling as if I don’t fit, or that my current state does not agree with me.
