Dove and Turtle

Anticipating owl’s hoot
dove’s coo startles me

I am plodding turtle
hard-shelled

searching for circles
in this squared-off existence

Dove offers a throaty laugh
then is gone before

my soft-bellied self
can beg deliverance.

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

    1. I wanted to say that I really enjoyed this post, both the poem and the lovely artwork. Sorry for the messy comments. I am having trouble lately being able to do comments. Do not know what’s up.

  1. Love the artwork! I’m intrigued by the dove, it comes across with a darkened image…”offers a throaty laugh”, we don’t often read of the dove as one who mocks, or was it more that he’s just out of reach?

    1. It’s true that the dove is usually a soothing presence, but the narrator doesn’t figure that out till it’s too late. It’s the trap of expectations and defensiveness, I’d say.
