Pretty lacks commitment..
“I’m pretty sure…”
“Such a pretty ____”
It doesn’t mitigate sorrow
or revel in depths
Flavourless is pretty
a hollow word
Even less profound
when paired with nice.

I have never thought about the context of usage of pretty in various sentences. This really made me stop for a moment and appreciate how the word “pretty” means one thing but conveys something else.

Thanks Keerthi. I am conscious of giving my granddaughters more concrete and constructive feedback than “What a pretty girl”

It definitely is an insightful approach towards empowerment 🤩

I’m not quite ready to condemn pretty or nice when used with sincerity and appropriate to the situation. But it’s always good to strive for an expended and precise vocabulary. I like the image and poem – she’s a bit mysterious.

I wouldn’t dare suggest to ban the words, I am just trying to offer young women better frameworks for their being.

I love this – it is more than pretty nice! 🙂
I think the word pretty comes from an Old English word that means ‘tricky’. That works with your poem.

Remember the saying “pretty is as pretty does”? Yep. Love your poem, and the art, VJ.

Your picture is lovely. I’ve always rather liked pretty. It is less than beautiful but better than nice.

I try to catch myself when complimenting my granddaughters – use more precise words – too many girls are trapped by ‘pretty’ and ‘nice’. My soapbox for the day, lol.

A worthy soap box to be on.
