The Loner

Never joined a sorority,
irked by the concept
of conformity…

Besides, those girls
flirted with audacity,
while my self-image
was frail, shattered by
the fraternity next door.

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

  1. Not a sorority girl either. Much too poor at the time. Lived at home, then later I was married – still lived at home. Didn’t miss it. Too crazy for me at that time, especially.

      1. I hear that. Once I got through my first year and a stint at a dental assistant course, I was doing the same, but not at 17. You were very young. We had just moved 2500 miles away from my dad when I was 15, so I was needed at home. I stayed until I was about 19.

  2. Despite me never joining a sorority, all my children did. My youngest uses it a tool for professional advancement and nurturing relationships. She has found these relationships helpful when making career moves. The comfort of a familiar face has its benefits.

  3. I can relate. Not so much with college, but with High School, and life. I enjoy being on my own, actually. The older I get, the more I realize I need to make a few good friends to grow old with…

  4. Yup. Truth in 28 words. Although so sad, this is very refreshing in a way—I am so sick of hearing millions of words of lies in the media! (Here endeth my rant..) 😉

  5. I can relate to the sorority thing, VJ. I avoided them. But I have been a joiner, it just wasn’t Greek, you know the marching band, the church choir, National Writing Project… that kind of thing. I did enjoy how you put the poem together. And I can imagine living next to a frat house would be irritating at best. 🙂

  6. I have been a loner my entire life VJ. Especially when it comes to my interior life. Thank you for this post and all your poetry and creativity. You remind me to open the door to my interior. Maybe today.. one inch more. Andrea ❤️
