Just a Dummy

Words are not my own
wits hapless

That rendezvous
with the devil
sealed it –

Free will for love
I’d bargained

Ache of loneliness
too much to bear –

Now I’m just a puppet
ventriloquist’s dummy

Ask a question
watch him work my strings.

Permission to write, paint, and imagine are the gifts I gave myself when chronic illness hit - a fair exchange: being for doing. Relevance is an attitude. Humour essential.

      1. It’s interesting that you mention poetic license. I remember being taught way back in the ninth grade not to assume that the speaker of the poem is the poet or that the content of the poem is autobiographical. But of course, it’s never that simple, is it?

  1. Aww, this feels so sad and terrible. I had to read this twice and on the second time it really hit me hard. I felt every word and pain, it feels awful. Thank you for sharing this unique and very deep and full of emotions post. Wow!

      1. Thank you for providing me with knowledge, it can be psychological, emotional and can include neglect. abuse is horrible and I wish for no-one to experience it.

  2. Hmm. I know that control is real. Experienced it with a former spouse. I have been listening to podcasts on abusive relationships and relating them to my own mother’s experience. She married a man so controlling, she had no voice of her own.
