Even heroes lapse
life’s connections tenuous
I set my dial on pleasing
regret failures –
Wish I could shake
this empathetic impulse
Allow others just to be –
focus on accountability for me.

Read this through a few times. Really thoughtful work. That’s interesting: “I set my dial on pleasing / regret failures β”

Thanks Benjamin. I’m a compulsive people pleaser – a habit that seldom serves anyone.

You’re welcome. Me too, I think (and I agree with you in that it’s not as helpful as it sounds at first).

If we’re hardwired with that empathetic impulse, it’s hard to shake. If not shake, dialing it back can still be a challenge. Thought provoking poem (and very cool image)!

Thanks. Dialing it back is a good term.

We do have that impulse but how could we not all be different? We each have unique DNA and life experiences.

Thanks Liz. There was something about that dog pausing in the road ahead and that sign that spoke to me too.

The words resonate with me. And then looking at the image they take on a stronger meaning to me. Nice.
