Girls are lucky: just need to find the right man –
looked after for life.
Advice from a teenaged brother.
Right! I yell back, fifty years later.
It was all a vacation –
raising the children on my own
looking for God in the midst of chaos
partners with wandering eyes
or absent…always absent…
still waiting for that “looking after”
And how did you make out, Brother Dear?
Oh, that’s right… married
… woman with a good job
willing to let you putter in the background
Guess we were both misled.

Fantastic ♥️👏🏼

Oh my! My Mother always used to tell me to marry for money not love. That says a lot about her marriage. I did not marry for money but it has turned out well despite that as I am a “woman of independent means” as they say!

My oldest sister used to tell me that. Her marriage broke down after 2 years – not a good example to follow. Appreciate the comment.

Wow, that’s so true. Women have to take care of themselves and others as well.

never trust a brother VJ, I speak from experience … but it was my parents who told me I didn’t need an education, etc coz I’d just find a man and have his babies!
Needless to say I haven’t had children 😉

Even if it does come to pass, I don’t think “being looked after” is all it’s cracked up to be.

Ha, life often doesn’t turn out as we expect from our childhood expectations. Love how you captured sibling dynamics.

Thanks Janet. The poem is tongue-in-cheek, evolved from a dream.

Yes we do learn the truth. The belief of youth. Just lessons for us to know. We must seek some happiness for ourselves to be strong and be able to stand alone. Outstanding poetry my friend.
