I have measured out my life with coffee spoons.”
Source: “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T.S. Eliot
I line my spoons on the counter –
measures of the day’s reserves
one spoon for morning tea
with a side of emails read
a shower requires two or three
with a guarantee of needed rest
I’ll linger horizontal – added care
when an outing is in the plans
the thrill of venturing, and delight
of conversation shared wipes
the counter clean – I’ll crash
and crave for one spoon more
enough to get me into bed
pray tomorrow’s count the same.
(For Reena’s Exploration challenge, in which she challenges us to use one of the given lines of poetry. Spooning is the term used for those of us with chronic illness who have limited energy. Myalgic Encephalomyelitis is characterized by exhaustion after exertions. My day starts with depleted energy, and I work from there.)
A lovely way to measure the day. May you gain energy for more outings.

I imagine this as rationing energy just to make it through the day, and I give you credit for having the strength to make that work.

Thanks Ken. Such is my life – not a lot of choice.

Wow, it’s been so long since I last read this same piece by Prufrock! A pleasant suprise and as Cee says, “Qi hugs” *hugs filled with energy*

I love how you’ve taken Eliot’s objective correlative and made it your own. Very nicely done!

Its a line form The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, I figured you’d have it memorized.

No memorizing here – brain no longer functions that way.

You know VJ, sometimes I wonder if I should have been a pair of ragged claws scuttling across the floors of silent seas. That’s normal right?

That’s sounds like fun. Crabby, are you?

Does that like sound familiar?

Ha ha ha …well, I’m not so crabby when I’m laughing, so thanks for that.

“Spooning out energy” – though some don’t realize it, we each have only so much energy at any moment. Wishing you a stable daily supply, with gratitude for your posts that help me relate to my own body’s commands.

Thanks Jazz. I’ve also seen it referred to as an envelope – as in we each are allotted an envelope of energy, and how are we going to portion it out in a day.

love the way you have integrated the spoon into metaphor and the tail activities – well done

Beautifully done. My favorite poem is Prufrock, as you might have guessed and that line resonates on so many different levels.

Oh yes – I’m sure Eliot did not mean it as I’ve applied it, but I love the metaphor.
