Confronted with the confines
of your hate-centered speech,
I choke on disbelief,
mind sputters, stalls,
conversation moves on
and all I can manage
is an impotent withdrawal.
(Submitted for Ragtag Community’s prompt: sputter, and Fandango’s: manage. Inspired by the hate rhetoric passed about on social media, often initiated by those I otherwise respect. How do you respond?)
Sometimes withdrawal is the the only and best option in the face of such vileness. Love that art piece speaks so well to feeling.

Thanks Paul. I am a great one to think of comebacks after the fact.

Ah yes, I can think on my feet, but the rest of the family would agree with your understanding.

A timely and excellent piece! What we say is as much as a slippery slope as what others hear!

We all find ourselves in this kind of situation and you put a life on it VJ

Thanks. I find myself continually disappointed. Guess I hope too much.

This sums the situation up very nicely.

I think it is very well written as well. I agree – I totally back off and just realize I now have a new awareness of someone.

Thank you Robyn. It does change our awareness of a person. Sometimes that saddens me, especially if it is someone I really like.

This is well written, reflects, I believe, a situation we all find ourselves in at one point or another. On facebook, I rarely do respond. I probably should. In person, I try to speak up as I believe silence is part of the problem.

Facebook seems to be the worst. I have tried to educate people, and even blocked certain posts – all ineffective. Wish I was quicker to think of responses in person. I will keep trying. Thanks.

Sputters is a good term for this. My mind goes into a freeze. I quit Facebook partially because of this type of conversation. My in-person response is to offer my opinion. And then move on. No sense arguing with some people. Toxic speech just pollutes the air around me.

It really does. I find I am speechless. I guess some people are just clueless, yet I’m sure I’ve offended others, inadvertently.

I often ask myself…”what is WRONG with people?” !!

Exactly!

I will be disappointed, too. I’ll just think that no one really is perfect. The same person who can say good things can one day slip and say something, intentionally or inadvertently, another may find offensive. And vice versa.

It’s true – I think some things are said without thought.
