Elegantly attired, he arrives,
focused on an afternoon feast –
garter snakes hiding in bushes –
hadn’t counted on human presence,
interrogates me with hawkish eyes,
just long enough to be immortalized.

Great photograph, V.J., and I love your description of your elegantly attired visitor. I am often interrogated by his kind. Great sestet!

A wonderful photo…an occasion well worth a poem. I’ve never been as close to a hawk as you must have been.

This was likely the closest I’ve been in a natural setting. Pretty amazing

I love hawks and we had a similar experience when one landed on our fence as we watched from a very short distance from inside our window. Those hawk eyes can be intimidating, but I loved the brief interaction. I love how you describe him as “elegantly attired”….hehe.

Crows are pretty tough birds, but I’ve never seen them challenge a hawk. At the ocean I watch them bully the seagulls. Nice to see that you keep your camera handy.

I’m sure I drive others crazy, but I love my camera – and this is a new one my husband just bought for me. Crows here are relentless in going after hawks.

Fantastic shot! Love the look in his eyes. Your words and the look on his face reminds me of a gentleman in the 1930’s formally dressed for dinner with a look of “what do we have here?!”

Wonderful shot, VJ! Such a handsome guy – he would surely be honored to have become a poem… if he’d stuck around to find out!

He is gorgeous! Such an honour to share a moment with him. It was actually two crows that chased him off – he didn’t seem too put out by me.
