She dresses for company,
every day –
just in case.
Keeps a puzzle at her side –
a distraction for lonely times,
entertainment for guests.
Body failing,
eyes challenged,
but mind is sharp.
At ninety-one,
how she keeps going
remains a mystery to most.
(Mish is hosting in the dVerse pub tonight. The challenge is to write a poem in 44 words (quadrille) using the word puzzle. Thanks Mish!)
Powerful image to go with this.

Sounds like a strong-willed woman. How I hope my mind remains sharp.

This really tugs at the heart strings. It could be about my mom too. It saddens me that in this big world of people that anyone should ever be lonely, but it’s a reality. I think technology plays into it as well. My mom is hurt that she doesn’t receive phone calls and cards in the mail anymore. It’s all about the internet.

We tried to set Mom up on the internet, but she doesn’t get it. It would help keep her in the loop. She says she understands her own mother better now – and so it goes. Thanks for your comments.

What a lovely photo of your mom. So intense on solving the puzzle. Your words capture the essence of the human condition of the elderly. She’s lucky she still has family to take the edge off loneliness. Some don’t.

So true. She lives in a nursing home, and she worries about the ones that have no family.

This is beautiful. I want to sit with her awhile, and talk. And perhaps help her solve a piece or two.
