Strawberries ripen, their scarlet-red sweetness staining the cheeks of students whose bodies, unripened, rail against the conformity of stiff backed chairs and bolted down desks. Spring has dared to don the cloak of summer – green emboldened fields trampling over delicate beginnings; and we are splash pad, motorcycle revving, boom box crazy: ready to plunge into the swelter, restless.
Strawberries ripen
Spring’s sweet offerings foretell –
Summer games begin.
(Jilly at DVerse challenges to be unconventional in our halibun writing. Not sure how unconventional I am, but this was fun to write.)
Loved how you went from ripened strawberries to unripened students. I read this piece several times. Liked it more each time.

And this was a delight to read! I like the contrast you portrayed, being bolted down and then free, ready to celebrate with strawberry-stained fingers!

Thanks for noticing the contrast. School days never end soon enough…or so I remember.

Strawberries in season are so different from those year-round fruits pretending to be strawberries…

It’s the best. And in our part of the world, it kicks off fresh fruit and veg season – a promise of good things to come.

P. S. You are telling your age if you remember those bolted down desks!!

Ha ha…I started out in a one-room schoolhouse. That makes me ancient.

My background was very similar! Two grades in one room.

We actually had two rooms – one for primary (up to second grade) and the rest of the grades (up to eight) were piled into one room. There were four five of us in grade 3, and I’m not sure about the numbers for the other years. I just remember a twelve-year-old boy whose desk was behind mine, who did grade 3 work because he kept failing.

Strwberries are gems you can eat! Too bad the season is so short! I loved your description of children getting out of school for the summer…”students whose bodies, unripened, rail against the conformity of stiff backed chairs and bolted down desks. Spring has dared to don the cloak of summer – green emboldened fields trampling over delicate beginnings;”

I’m enjoying Strawberry Season these days. When I was a child they brought me out in hives – now I love them and they love me! I love the way you relate them to summer games – they remind me of tennis at Wimbledon. ;).

Thanks, Kim. My daughter had the same problem as a child – hers went away too. Strawberries are the best.
